‘Tis the Season for Frozen Diesel Fuel: Here’s What to Do About It

Diesel fuel naturally contains a beneficial waxy material, provided it remains liquid. As the temperature drops, however, the wax solidifies into a snow-cone-like material, like what your kids eat at the state fair. Your fuel system will struggle to pump this material, eventually starving the engine of fuel and leaving you stranded.

The fuel refineries do a pretty good job of blending winter-rated diesel fuel that avoids gelling. But they typically base the rating of the fuel on temperature projections that don’t leave room for sudden and violent temperature swings. If you find yourself checking the weather on your phone and the outlook calls for blustery, cold temps, it’s possible the fuel at the station where you plan to fill up the next morning doesn’t yet have fuel blended for the temperatures in the forecast.

  1. One of my customers was using All In One and his fuel gelled at just 26 below F. What are we going to do when it gets cold? It was recently bought fuel from a top tier supplier with a high turnover.

      I’m sorry to hear your customer still had fuel-system issues while using our product. Our Diesel-All-In-One is super-concentrated to provide the best opportunity to keep your fuel flowing to the engine. Please ensure your customer treated his tank with our product and then filled up with fuel to help mix the additive. Additionally this product is to be used proactively, so if the temp dropped and your customer poured the product on top of a full tank hoping it would help, it’s possible the fuel had already gelled. In these cases, our Diesel Recovery is the right product. If your customer used the product correctly, then it’s possible the fuel from the station was untreated summer ULSD #2 fuel. If that is the case then our additive on top of summer fuel will not likely keep the truck from gelling down to -26F since summer fuel has a cold-filter plugging point well above 0F.

      We used the treat rate most often recommended by Howes. It’s the treat rate they use heavily in their marketing, the most prominent on their packaging and datasheets, and the most cost-effective solution for their customers. Given those reasons, we chose that treat rate as it’s most likely the treat rate many of their customers use.

  2. Good article Mark. I have to add my experience with the Diesel All In One. I bought #2 diesel fuel for my semi truck. Don’t know the quality of it as cold filter plug point (gel point) temperature can vary from fuel stations. It got down to 7°F, truck not plugged in all night. It fired right up and didn’t have any problems!! This truck is known for being cold blooded also.
