About two months ago, I was surrounded by dust, exhaust fumes and close to 100,000 fellow off-road fans at King of the Hammers (cue my Gravatar).
There were a few murmurs about a virus infiltrating our country, but no solid information to back it up, so we carried on as usual through an epic week of racing.
Cut to today as I type this from my dining-room table, sheltered at home for nearly five weeks. Like myself, folks around the world are in a similar situation, and Team AMSOIL is no exception as races and events have been canceled.
Let’s look at what some of our racers and influencers are doing during the “new normal.”
Gordon Tronson fabricates face shields
Gordon Tronson, featured in last year’s Company of Enthusiasts campaign, has made a name for himself building outlandish, multi-engine hot rods. In our minds, he’s already the “epitome of awesome.”
But he’s reached a whole new level of awesome fabricating face shields recently and delivering them to local hospitals in one of his custom hot rods (how else?).
In total, he’s made and distributed more than 200 shields.
Brad Lovell welcomes some catch-up time
Brad Lovell and crew has had a busy couple months. After conquering (and winning) the Every Man Challenge at King of the Hammers in February, they were off to the Mint 400 with his Spec Trophy Truck where the team finished fourth. While gearing up for the San Felipe 250, Lovell found himself unexpectedly heading back home to Colorado.
Lovell has welcomed the unexpected time off as he’s been able to (finally) unpack from that epic week at King of the Hammers, tune up his new Polaris Turbo S pre-runner, fix the old one and even design some new t-shirts for the crew.
He’s even appeared in a new video game, Baja Big Air (featured below). In addition, the Lovell brothers recently purchased an old barn that will become the new home of Lovell Racing. Along with their sons, the Lovells look to build an expansive new shop as a family endeavor.
Seehorn Rally Team rallies in other ways
Jeff Seehorn was eagerly awaiting the start of the 2020 American Rally Association season before COVID-19 forced its cancelation.
After races through May were postponed, Seehorn poured his energy into his new career with 6OVRCRST Rallysport, a company that manufactures performance parts for Subarus. He has been helping them out with a few projects and learning CAD design.
Once the rally season is up and running again, the car will be fully wrapped and ready to go.
The fun never ends for Scheuring Speed Sports
The race season never really ends for Scheuring Speed Sports.
As soon as the final checkered flag flies on the AMSOIL Championship Snocross season, the team heads back to its shop in Aurora, Minn., to start working on the team’s UTV for the summer off-road season. And, with the final two rounds of the Snocross season canceled due to COVID-19, Mechanic-of-the-Year Elliot Burns switched from tightening sled tracks to aligning roll cages, using the extra few weeks to fine-tune for the first race scheduled for June 20-21.
With the Snocross season cut short, defending Pro Lite champ Hunter Patenaude found himself just shy of the crown this season. He filled in fans on how he’s preparing to compete in the Pro class next season during the first episode of the “Snocross Podcast presented by AMSOIL.”
