Well, race fans, summer is sadly coming to an end. And, after a summer of delayed and postponed events in 2020, 2021 saw a return to some level of normalcy.

As the leaves begin to change and the temperature begins to cool, let’s take a look back on a jammed-packed summer of action.

Rallies and off-road racing and car shows, oh my!

With attendance surpassing 500,000 this year, the 81st Sturgis Motorcycle Rally roared into the Black Hills Aug. 6-15 this year. It all kicked off with Ultra 4’s Black Hills Showdown. Teams from all over the country kicked off Sturgis with a roar. Check out a recap of all the action here.

Around that same time, halfway across the country, classic car enthusiasts flooded Reno, Nev., for Hot August Nights. Our friend Gordon Tronson had his latest build, a twin-engine Corvette that puts out about 1,300 horsepower, in the AMSOIL booth. Fittingly dubbed the “Super Super Car,” its most recent appearance has sent the automotive world buzzing.

Team AMSOIL shines at Indiana Sprint Week

Seven races, nine nights. The highly anticipated mid-summer string known as Indiana Sprint Week invaded the surrounding Indianapolis region July 23-31. Rain washed out the first event, but fortunately steered clear for the remainder for an impressive showing of racing.

The final race of the nine-day event ended with a pair of victories for Team AMSOIL. Justin Grant walked away with the nightly feature win, a solid bookend to his opening-race win. Kevin Thomas Jr. was crowned points champion for the event.

AMSOIL Championship Off Road making a name

Record car counts and busting attendance numbers were the trend this season for the AMSOIL Championship Off-Road series. COVID didn’t slow down the series much last year, but with lifted restrictions and more people willing to venture out, the series was flooded with drivers and fans this season.

With that infiltration came West Coast drivers ready to make their mark. In the end it was the Midwest winning in Pro 4×4 with CJ Greaves edging out Kyle Leduc and his dad Johnny Greaves. In Pro 2wd, Keegan Kincaid knocked off West Coast contender Jerrett Brooks to take home the crown. Other season notables include…

  • Johnny Greaves secured his 100th win, with the “grandpa” just inching by his son CJ
  • The likes of Bryce Menzies, Travis Pastrana, Tanner Foust and Mia Champman highlighted the entry list for the closing rounds at Crandon International Raceway

What’s on tap

Coming out of a busy summer season doesn’t mean racing is over. Here’s what’s in store this fall:

  • With a break in their summer action, GNCC resumes this month, finishing the season with the popular Ironman race Oct. 23-24.
  • AMSOIL Championship Snocross kicks off 2022 in Canterbury, Minn. The highly anticipated “Daytona of Snocross” took a year off last year due to COVID, but will be back to begin the 2022 season.

We’ll see you at the races!
