2024 Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s

Nestled among the rolling hills of rural Tennessee, just an hour west of Nashville, sits Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Known for the country music artist who wrote such hits as “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” the Ranch is also home to the annual Amateur National Motocross Championship the last week every July.

It all started in 1981. A trio of motorcycle promoters from Ohio and West Virginia were looking for an accessible facility. A country music star wanted to fill a campground. A sanctioning body wanted to add an exciting event to boost their membership.

Davey Coombs and his wife Rita saw an opportunity for all of the above. After struggling through racing politics with their own two boys, they took notes and sought to create a fair, fun event. They sold the Lynn family on bringing grassroots racing to fill up their campground for one week each year. A previously ad hoc distribution of races throughout the country finally became a national event at the Ranch in 1982, and has since become recognized throughout the motocross community.

Dubbed the “World’s greatest motocross vacation,” the National Championship is a culmination of 50 area qualifiers and 13 regional championships — 42 riders from each of 36 classes earn tickets to compete at the Ranch.

The song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” kicked off the first gate drop each morning as this year’s event saw temperatures in the mid-90s and humidity close to 60%. Riders from all 50 states and eight countries competed in three motos for each or their classes. Nearly 1,000 riders and close to 4,000 fans journeyed to this motorcyclist mecca to experience the 43rd Amateur National Motocross Championship.

Five days of racing crowned 36 champions, launching racing careers, building rider confidence and making memories for families and enthusiasts alike.
