If you own a turbodiesel truck, chances are you bought it for its raw power. AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils provide the outstanding protection needed to keep your truck operating at its best, but have you ever wondered how often to change diesel oil?
Unfortunately, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” answer. How often you change diesel oil will depend on a few different factors, such as…
- Driving conditions – the higher the stress level on your engine, the higher the stress on the oil, and the more often it will require changing.
- Ambient conditions – extreme heat and cold also take a toll on oil, requiring more frequent changes.
- Engine modifications – if you’ve modified the engine to make more torque or power, you’ll need to change oil more often.
- Manufacturer recommendations – each engine manufacturer provides its own oil-change recommendations, so find that information in your owner’s manual and go from there.
Change diesel oil as little as possible with oil analysis
If your goal is to change diesel oil as little as possible, you can’t beat used oil analysis.
It allows you to see precisely what’s happening inside your engine and how the oil is holding up. The results you receive from the lab will tell you whether the oil needs changing, ensuring you don’t drain out good oil.
It’s relatively inexpensive, saves time and money in the long run and, as we show here, easy to do.

How far can I extend drain intervals with Signature Series Diesel Oil?
Diesel engine service life
Heavy-Duty On-/Off-Road: Three times (3X) OEM3 recommendation, not to exceed 60,000 miles (96,500 km)/600 hours or one year, whichever comes first.
Turbodiesel Pickup: Two times (2X) OEM3 recommendation, not to exceed 25,000 miles (40,200 km) or one year, whichever comes first.
Competition Service Life: Provides lasting protection for multiple events. Use oil analysis to determine appropriate drain interval.
Gasoline engine service life
Two times (2X) OEM3 recommendation, not to exceed 15,000 miles (24,100 km) or one year, whichever comes first.
Drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis.
1than required by the Detroit Diesel DD13 Scuffing Test for Specification DFS 93K222 using 10W-30 as worst-case representation.
2than required by the Detroit Diesel DD13 Scuffing Test for Specification DFS 93K222 using 5W-30 as worst-case representation.
3Refer to your owner’s manual for OEM drain interval recommendations and guidelines for severe and normal service.
Note: Extended drain intervals are not recommended for performance-modified engines, when using biofuels containing more than 10 percent ethanol or 15 percent biodiesel (B15) or for 2007-2009 Caterpillar C13 and C15 on-highway engines. Extend drain intervals beyond OEM recommendations in these instances only with oil analysis. Note: 2007-2010 Dodge, Ford and GM turbodiesel pickups are also not recommended for extended drain intervals when using Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-30 Synthetic Diesel Oil (DHD).
