At just 9 years old, San Diego’s Kayson Kempel is already making waves in the motocross world. Kempel is a regular rider at California motocross tracks, including Perris Raceway and Glen Helen Raceway.
Kempel is determined and focused on improving his skills and gaining recognition in the sport, despite facing various challenges and injuries. We interviewed this young rider to learn more about his passion for racing and his goals for the future.
How did you get started in racing?
I saw videos of my father’s friends’ sons riding and racing. I wanted to try it and loved it.
Where do you race and what events do you participate in?
I race the Swap Moto and Moto 4 Kids local series and I’ve been going to the Arizona Open for the last two years and trying to qualify for Mammoth and Loretta’s. But my favorite local tracks are Fox Raceway and Perris Raceway, which I ride every Sunday.
What does racing mean to you?
It is my passion and means everything to me.
Tell us about your racing journey so far?
My dad is in the Marine Corps, so we move around. I started on the East Coast, raced my first race in Georgia and knew this is what I wanted to do. I, unfortunately, had a few setbacks. In 2022, I broke my hand on the track. And just recently in April, I fractured my wrist, which held me back from racing Mammoth.
What are your future goals?
I would like to make it to Loretta’s, which is my biggest goal. I try my best to compete in all the local races and attend the Arizona Open to better myself and make myself known.
Kempel ‘s passion for motocross is evident and his dedication to the sport at such a young age is impressive. We’ll be keeping an eye on this rising star’s progress as he continues to train and compete in the world of motocross racing.
