Jerry Dixey has a pretty sweet gig.
For more than 20 years, the Street Rodder Magazine Road Tour Director has been traveling the country leading the magazine’s namesake, the Street Rodder Road Tour. In total, Dixey has traveled 500,000 miles across the country in a hot rod, seeing famous car collections, landmarks and more along the way. And Wednesday, the Tour took a day trip, as it has in past years, up to Superior, Wis., to visit AMSOIL headquarters.
The Street Rodder Road Tour leads enthusiasts on a series of road trips across the country in restored street rods. As part of the first of nine legs of the 2018 Tour, “Road Tourians” met in St. Paul, Minn., for a week of car-enthusiast events culminating with the MSRA “Back to the ’50s Weekend” at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds June 22-24.
This leg of the tour includes a visit to local tourist attractions, car museums and even a stop at Walt Moss’ garage. After this weekend they will continue on for eight more legs of the Tour throughout the country, ending in Bakersfield, Calif. Tourians can participate in as many or as few legs of the Tour as they want. Though there are no restrictions on vehicle model year, car shows the Tour may visit along the way sometimes limit entries to a certain range. Cars on this leg of the Tour ranged from the 30s to the 60s.
The people you meet on the Tour are just as fascinating at the cars
Take Claire and his wife, for example. They have been part of the Street Rodder Road Tour for four years. This year, they traveled from Chicago in their ’41 Ford Super Deluxe. Their small collection of classic cars also includes a Corvette.
They had just recently purchased this Ford after Claire’s wife expressed interest in a convertible while at the “Cruisin’ the Coast” show in Biloxi, Miss. Cut to this week when the couple ended up driving in torrential downpours in southern Minnesota in a car with a questionable roof.
Luckily they only encountered a few small leaks on the seams. And, in an area where the past few visits from the Tour have included foggy, misty, cooler-by-the-lake weather, they were able to drop the top for their ride to St. Paul. Pure bliss.
Check out some images of Claire’s car and the rest of the Tour’s beauts below. We all had our favorites. I’m partial to the Camaro, obviously. AMSOIL is the Official Oil of both the “Street Rodder Road Tour” and the MSRA “Back to the ’50s” event.
