How Do I Know Which AMSOIL Products To Use?

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, marine outboards, personal watercraft, small engines, heavy-duty commercial vehicles… If you own any of these, you’re going to need oil to go with it. And, with all the different types and viscosities of oil out there, it can be confusing to know which AMSOIL product to use.

AMSOIL Tech Tips on Motorhead Garage with host John Gardner and AMSOIL product expert Len Groom: How to Find the Oil That’s Right for You
Video transcript: How to Find the Oil That’s Right for You

Featuring John Gardner, host of Motorhead Garage, and Leonard “Len” Groom, AMSOIL Director of Product Marketing (author profile).

John Gardner: Well, you just started out on a trip and bam, this pops up. Change oil soon. Problem, but not really, Len, when you go to AMSOIL. And I love this because as a technician and an instructor, I could just go to amsoil.com

and everything is there. Look at this, man. The oil for the vehicle. This is a 2015 Tahoe* 0W-20.

How much oil? And even better yet, the oil drain plug torque specifications. Everybody’s always tweaking those off. Those are phenomenal numbers.

A do it yourselfer, they can really go to AMSOIL and do their oil change. No problem.

Len Groom: Yeah. That’s correct. And we’ve spent a ton of time on that to make sure that information is there for a massive amount of vehicles and that the information is, of course, accurate. But, one of the neat things that I like about that is you can actually pick a kit. You can pick your mileage, you know, basically whatever you wanna do.

John Gardner: And, they’re gonna build the kits. I’m not making a 100 trips to the parts store.

Len Groom: That’s correct. It’s all there. The oil, the filter, the whole works is there. You just click and it shows up.

John Gardner: Now that mileage, you guys got some extended mileage. I know that’s a touchy situation. I put a sticker on. Sometimes I reset it, but, you know, sometimes you can go even further with that with AMSOIL.

Len Groom: That’s correct. You can go up to 25,000 miles if you select our Signature Series product. You can go when the engine light comes on. It’s basically whatever you wanna do. The thing is is that, you know, you’re staring at that change oil light. Some vehicles, you can actually go in the menu and add time to it. Some of them, you just need to reset it as you said.

John Gardner: Yeah. And reset it? Well, that could be rocket science on some of these vehicles. We went into one.

It was a BMW*. Now AMSOIL has all the European oils and things that you need for high technology cars as well. This is pretty cool. It actually showed us what to do.

We didn’t even have a dipstick in the car, which wow, we were kinda shocked we popped the hood and there was no dipstick whatsoever. So we had to go in and read. Believe that, Len. We had to look at that.

And we went in there and reset it, and then it gives you a whole list of things to do. Matter of fact, I’ll show you what we did. We went into the driver’s information center. And when we went into the driver’s information center, we had to dig deep into those menus.

It took a while and go into the notifications and find where the engine oil was. Once we found where the engine oil was, well, we could do a couple things. We could go into the menus and look at the service, and then we had to go follow that procedure, push that stick, and go ahead and reset that. But after we reset it, we actually had to go measure the engine oil because there was no dipstick.

So you have to be precise when you’re filling it. Then we went in there, we went to engine oil level, and then the car just kinda told us what to do. Measure the engine oil, get it up to operating temperature, and we had to wait. Once it did that, it checked the level, bam, we were good to go.

But Europeans have some huge technology built into their cars. You guys have oils for that as well.

Len Groom: We do. We have a full line of European oils that speaks to all of those different specs.

Basically, go on the website and pick your viscosity.

John Gardner: Whether you reach your interval or it’s time to change the oil, just go to amsoil.com. They have all the information and the products you need to do the job right.
